<< Few (if any) high speed CD-ROM drives can extract audio successfully at or even near their top-rated data speed. [...] The most common reason is that DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) was performed at too high a speed for your source CD-ROM [...] The solution is to slow down DAE.>>
— Adaptec, Creator of Toast™ (http://www.adaptec.com/support/faqs/daeproblems.html)
MacCDSpeed achieves this, preventing clicks, pops, or hissing within the track.
With Plextor® and Plextor®-like SCSI drives it even offers the ability to set intermediate speeds between 1x and max speed.
Warning on Burnings!
Because MacCDspeed slow down your CD-ROM drive, it will be safer to copy the audio tracks to your hard disk first and then record them back to CD. However, this is always the safest method.
Intermediate Speeds
Very few drives can handle speeds between 1x and their maximum speed. Generaly, drives handle 1x and their maximum speed ONLY. In this case, you have to use the 1x speed to achieve perfect audio extractions and you will not able to use intermediate speeds.
Some drives handle intermediate speeds: the very good Plextor® drives and drives built with a Plextor® motor (that can be sold under different trademarks). If you use one of these drives, check "I use Plextor® or Plextor®-like drive(s)". Then MacCDspeed let you set intermediate speeds between 1x and 50x. This feature works only with SCSI drives.
Generaly speaking, perfect extractions could be achieved with a speed equal to about max speed/10 (i.e. 4x for a 40x drive) and you don't need to use lower speeds.
How to use it
1) OPEN MACCDSPEED
a) Select the drive you want to slow down in the "Drive" pop-up menu.
b) Move the cursor to select the 1x speed.
b') You can use an intermediate speed between 1x and max speed if your drive is able to (the "I use Plextor® or Plextor®-like drive(s)" checkbox must be checked in this case).
c) You can quit now MacCDSpeed or not:
the speed setting for your drive remains until you change it again, you restart
or you shut down your computer or your drive.
2) OPEN YOUR FAVORITE AUDIO EXTRACTION PROGRAM
a) Use your program as before (I use Toast Audio Extractor from Adaptec® in this example)
b) That's all! Now, you should observe that audio extractions with your drive are slower... but with a good quality drive, audio extractions are now always perfect.
Limitations
MacCDSpeed is inoperant with some audio extraction softwares, specialy with some softwares that already controls speed of drives.
